I'M HERE TODAY

While PTSD is different for everyone, the battle is not fought alone. Support for those battling PTSD doesn't need to always be in a monetary form. Sharing your battle with PTSD helps in many ways:

  • showing others they are not alone

  • knowing there is hope that they can fight back

  • helping find their reason to fight back

  • helping the warrior support system better understand what their family/friends are going through each day in their battle with PTSD

I'm here today

Like many, my battle with PTSD has not been easy. I served in the Air Force for four years and did a tour in Balad, Iraq from '06-'07 as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). Upon returning from my deployment and, later on, finishing my service, there was no support or even discussion about PTSD. For nearly 10 years afterwards, I was oblivious, or better yet, ignorant to my own struggles. I drank away my thoughts, pain, ideations, confusion, and reactions. I've given in to my demons but failed; therefore, I'm still here today.

I finally asked for help in 2017 and have continued to receive mental health help from providers to this day. It wasn't a magical fix nor an overnight transformation once I asked for and accepted help. It has been a continuous effort, but worth it every step.

To be honest, I was ashamed, embarrassed, and felt weak for needing to ask for help. Unfortunately, many think this way and still do. I can't say I don't feel that way on my tough days but to those that read this remember: you're not alone in this -- many have been through this, will go through this, and you are strong enough to overcome it.

There will be good days, bad days, easy days, hard days, days where it doesn't seem like anything is worth it, days where it would be easier to not be here tomorrow, days where you feel like your old self again, and days where you switch from one spectrum to the other in a flash. It can seem like a rollercoaster each and every day.

The most powerful factor in fighting against PTSD: YOU!

  • YOU are worth more here
  • YOU can make a difference in your life
  • YOU can make a difference in your family's and friend's lives
  • YOU can make a difference in someone's life that is fighting PTSD
  • Know YOU are worth more here with each of us in this battle
  • Know that your family and friends are there to fight WITH YOU
  • Know that others are in this battle with YOU. YOU are not alone

I hope others will learn from my mistakes, my struggles, and my experiences to better their lives, to better the lives of their family, friends, brothers and sisters in arms, and other warriors against PTSD. We can win this battle if we FIGHT TOGETHER - as we never fight alone, we are never alone, and WE ARE STRONGER TOGETHER.
